More and more owners are giving their dogs CBD to calm them or relieve pain, but what do vets really say? Between divided opinions and scientific caution, the question deserves to be explored, and I'm here to do it with you.

Things to remember

  • CBD for dogs is generating interest, but scientific evidence remains limited.
  • Veterinarians remain cautious, insisting on product dosage and quality.
  • Before giving your dog CBD, always discuss it with a professional.

Why are some owners turning to CBD for their dogs?

You've probably already heard owners praise the benefits of CBD for their dogs, saying that they sleep better or are less anxious. Some even say that his aches and pains seem to improve.

CBD for pooches (and pets in general) is really on trend. The pet aisles of some pet shops and online boutiques are overflowing with CBD products for pets of all kinds.

Why the craze? Quite simply because CBD is seen as a natural alternative to conventional treatments. Many owners seek to help their dogs suffering from separation anxiety or phobias such as fireworks or thunderstorms. Some owners also give their pets CBD to help combat age-related pain such as osteoarthritis or inflammation.

According to some accounts, CBD has a calming and analgesic effect. However, nothing has been officially proven by science. For the moment, research is limited and the results do not allow us to scientifically confirm all these benefits.

What do vets say about using CBD for dogs?

Veterinarians are increasingly being approached by owners who want to test CBD on their dogs. But their discourse remains measured.

They, too, remind us that there are few serious clinical studies on CBD in animals. Most of the available data concerns humans, and the effect of CBD on dogs may be different.

Some preliminary research has shown encouraging leads. For example, in trials with dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, CBD may have reduced pain and improved mobility.

Other studies are looking into its benefits in managing anxiety or certain epileptic seizures, but these results are still too limited to be generalized. So, is CBD dangerous for animals? Well,veterinarians insist on the possible risks:

  • Drowsiness, loss of energy;
  • Digestive disorders (diarrhea, vomiting) ;
  • Interactions with other drugs, especially those metabolized by the liver.

And don't forget that THC products are dangerous, even toxic, for dogs. Only purified, THC-free CBD can be considered.

That's why most vets advise always talking to an animal health professional before considering giving your pet CBD.

How to give CBD to a dog safely?

If, despite the precautions, you want to try CBD for your four-legged friend, you need to follow a few golden rules. I've prepared a few clear points for you to keep in mind.

To begin with, always choose products specially designed for pets. Whether oils or treats, they should be formulated for dogs with a suitable CBD concentration.

Also check that the product has been analyzed in an independent laboratory and that it has a certificate of analysis proving the absence of THC as well as the exact CBD concentration.

Let's move on to my advice for doggies:

  • Start with a very low dosage and increase gradually if necessary, always under veterinary supervision.
  • Watch your dog carefully. If you notice any side effects (excessive fatigue, digestive problems), stop immediately.
  • Never give products intended for humans, as the dosages are not suitable and some ingredients may be toxic to animals.

CBD is not a magic candy. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's risk-free, but with veterinary supervision, some dogs may benefit. Without supervision, on the other hand, you're taking a real risk for your pet's health.
