Does CBD sting your throat? Here's why and what to do about it

CBD is well known for its many benefits. Nevertheless, it can also cause unpleasant side effects, such as a feeling of irritation. The reasons for CBD stinging the throat can be varied, as you'll see. Discover my tips for solving this problem.

How CBD is administered

Different ways to consume CBD

The way you consume CBD may play a role in the unpleasant sensation felt in the throat. In fact, as you know, there are several ways to consume cannabidiol: vaping, infusions, in the form of food supplements, cosmetics, gummies...

CBD smoking and irritation

Why does vaping CBD cause irritation? Because vaping, or smoking (although I don't recommend this method of consumption), involves heating the product. If the product is heated too high, certain harmful volatile substances escape, heading for your lungs. The vapour, or smoke, created during vaping can cause burning, tingling or irritation in the throat. Hence the crucial importance of respecting the recommended temperature ranges (160°- 220°) when vaping. In short, don't forget to check your electronic cigarette settings!

Sublingual administration

Putting a few drops of CBD oil under the tongue is another easy way to consume CBD. For some people, however, this method of consumption also causes temporary discomfort, such as throat irritation. Note, however, that this method does have its advantages, such as rapid absorption by the mucous membranes.

Product composition and quality

Uneven CBD products

First of all, you need to know that not all products containing CBD are equal in terms of composition and quality. Manufacturing processes and the different ingredients contained vary. And this will have a final influence on the potential irritation you may experience.

For example, when it comes to CBD oilsoils, manufacturers sometimes add diluents and synthetic flavourings. These substances are often a source of irritation. Poor-quality hemp used in CBD products can also be irritating.

The case of e-liquids

It's the same with CBD e-liquids: additives and other ingredients can cause discomfort in the throat. Propylene glycol in particular, common in e-liquids, is known to create irritation, the famous "hit" in the throat. When choosing your CBD vape liquid, take care to select an e-liquid containing more vegetable glycerine than propylene glycol, if you're sensitive to PG.

Allergic reactions

More generally, ingesting CBD oil or capsules may cause an allergic reaction, depending on the individual. This would be a reaction to one of the specific components. The cannabinoid or alcohol content of certain products can also play a part in this irritation. In this case, as for the reasons given above, you need to take extra care when selecting your CBD products, which must be of the highest quality, with the right dosage.

How can I reduce the burning sensation in my throat?

If you've noticed that CBD causes an irritating or burning, "stinging" sensation in the throat, I'll give you a few pointers to improve this unpleasant aspect.

You need to consume high-quality products, preferably tested in independent laboratories. I insist on this crucial point. Whenever possible, choose certified organic products. You can try out different ways of consuming CBD, to find out which is more pleasant for you.

For vaping, when using an e-cigarette, set the heating temperature as precisely as possible to suit. Don't forget to choose CBD liquids with a different vegetable glycerine/propylene glycol ratio.

Be sure to start with low doses of CBD oil, and work your way up. Finally, drink plenty of water (we often don't drink enough).

With these various tips, you should enjoy the potential benefits associated with CBD, without being bothered by side effects, such as irritation in the throat. At Mama Kana, you'll find value-for-money CBD products that are the best way to minimize the sensation of a scratchy throat!
