When you compare several products at a CBD shop, you’ll quickly notice that the same CBD concentration doesn’t necessarily guarantee the same experience. Researchers are specifically interested in the role of terpenes—those aromatic compounds found in hemp—which may contribute to the differences observed between products.

Terpenes: Much More Than Just Aromatic Molecules

The terpenes are found in thousands of plant species. They are also found in lemons, lavender, rosemary, pine, and hops.


In hemp, they contribute to the distinctive aroma of each cultivar. It is largely thanks to them that a CBD flower can develop fruity, citrusy, floral, woody, or spicy notes.


Analyses of hemp have identifiedmore than a hundred differentterpenes, although only a handful are generally present in significant quantities.


Properties Studied Individually


Research isn't just focused on their scent. Myrcene, limonene, and linalool, pinene, and beta-caryophyllene have been the subject of specific studies for several years.


Some studies suggest anti-inflammatory, analgesic, or relaxing properties, depending on the specific compounds observed, regardless of the products’ CBD content. However, it is important to distinguish between results obtained in the laboratory and the effects actually observed in consumers.

The Entourage Effect: What Does the Science Say in 2026?


A Theory That Has Become Indispensable


The entourage effect refers to the hypothesis that the various compounds in hemp may act together rather than separately.


According to this theory, cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant molecules may interact in a complementary manner.


What Recent Scientific Journals Indicate


Scientific journals published in recent years offer a nuanced answer.


Researchers acknowledge that several terpenes have documented biological activities. They also point out that certain interactions with cannabinoids have been observed in preclinical models.


However, clinical evidence supporting the conclusion that a specific blend of terpenes consistently alters the effects of CBD in humansremains limited. Several research teams therefore consider the entourage effect to be a credible hypothesis, but one that has not yet been fully proven.

Research published in 2025 showed that several terpenes in cannabis could interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system in experimental models.


These findings reinforce the scientific interest in terpenes, although further studies are needed to determine their actual impact on humans.


Myrcene


Myrcene is one of the most abundant terpenes in hemp. It is also found in hops, lemongrass, thyme, bay leaves, and certain varieties of mango. Its aromatic profile is generally described as earthy, herbal, and slightly musky, sometimes with spicy undertones.


From a scientific perspective, myrcene is one of the most extensively studied terpenes in aromatic plants. Researchers are particularly interested in its potential role in mechanisms related to inflammation, the response to oxidative stress, and muscle relaxation. Several preclinical studies also suggest that it may contribute to certain calming effects observed in terpene-rich plant extracts.


In the cannabis and CBD industry, myrcene is often associated with profiles that are perceived as more soothing. 


Limonene


Recognizable by its citrus aromas reminiscent of lemon, orange, or grapefruit, limonene is one of the most common terpenes found in nature. It occurs naturally in citrus peels, as well as in rosemary, mint, and certain varieties of hemp.


Limonene is believed to have numerous biological properties that have been studied for several decades, including potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Research is also exploring its influence on certain neurological mechanisms involved in stress management and mood regulation.


Limonene is often associated with strains that consumers describe as more stimulating, energizing, or conducive to concentration.

Linalool


Linalool is associated with soft floral notes that immediately bring to mind lavender. It is also found in cilantro, basil, rose, and rosewood. Its delicate fragrance makes it one of the most widely used terpenes in the perfume and essential oil industries.

From a scientific perspective, linalool has been the subject of extensive research into its interaction with various biological systems. Several preclinical studies have examined its potential influence on certain mechanisms involved in stress, relaxation, and sleep quality. Other studies have focused on its antioxidant properties and its potential role in modulating certain inflammatory responses.

Profiles rich in linalool are often described as milder and more floral. Consumers frequently associate these varieties with feelings of relaxation and comfort.


Beta-caryophyllene


Beta-caryophyllene holds a special place among terpenes. Found in black pepper, cloves, oregano, basil, and hemp, it is distinguished by its spicy, woody, and slightly peppery aroma.

Unlike most known terpenes, beta-caryophyllene is capable of interacting directly with the CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This unique characteristic explains the considerable interest researchers have shown in it over the past several years.

Scientific studies are currently exploring its potential in mechanisms related to inflammation, pain, and cell protection.
