You may have already heard about this idea going around on forums: applyingCBD oil on a sugar cube. Mama wants to be clear with you: her oils are labeled “This product is not intended for consumption.” Let me explain what that means, why you need to follow this warning, and what the regulations say about CBD.
To remember
- Mama Kana's CBD oils are not intended for consumption: it says so on the label.
- In Europe, CBD and hemp extracts are considered “novel foods” that are not currently authorized.
- The right thing to do is simple: read the label and follow the instructions—that's all there is to it.
CBD oil and sugar: Where did this idea come from?
CBD has become very popular in just a few years. With this popularity, many tips are being shared online, in videos, or among friends. The story about the sugar cube is one of them.
These tips don’t come from manufacturers or government agencies. They’re passed along by word of mouth, without checking what the product label says or what the law allows. That’s exactly where Mama wants to help you see things clearly.
CBD oil is not cooking oil, and adding sugar doesn't change that. What matters is the intended use as specified by the manufacturer and seller of the product. And that intended use is clearly stated on the bottle.
What the Label on Our Oils Says
A clear statement
On every bottle of Mama Kana CBD oil, you’ll find the phrase “This product is not intended for consumption.” It’s not just there to look nice. It simply means that the product is not sold to be eaten, mixed with food, or placed on a sugar cube.
Why follow the label?
The label is the product’s official instruction manual. It reflects what the manufacturer guarantees and what is permitted by regulations. To deviate from these guidelines is to use the product in a way for which it was not designed or evaluated.
Mom is telling you this with the best of intentions: if a tip you read online contradicts the label, the label is right. And if you have any doubts, ask us before you buy.
What Else the Label Tells You
The bottle also lists the CBD concentration, the type of extract (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate), the carrier oil, the lot number, and the expiration date. This information allows you to compare products and know exactly what you’re getting.
What the Regulations Say About CBD
CBD, an unauthorized “novel food”
In Europe, any product that was not consumed in significant quantities prior to May 1997 is considered a “novel food.” It must be evaluated and then authorized before it can be sold for human consumption (European Regulation 2015/2283). CBD and other hemp extracts fall into this category, and none have been authorized to date.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) explained in June 2022 that it could not yet issue an opinion on the safety of CBD as a novel food due to a lack of sufficient data. In February 2026, it published an update confirming that these data gaps persist.
Items with a purchase history
Only a few parts of the hemp plant are exempt from this classification, because they were already being consumed in Europe before 1997:
- hemp seeds and their derivatives, such as hemp seed oil;
- Hemp leaves intended solely for steeping in water, without flowers and without added cannabinoid extracts.
CBD oil, on the other hand, contains hemp extract. It is therefore not one of those exceptions.
Mama's Tips for Choosing the Right Oil
Choosing a quality CBD oil
I recommend a CBD oil without unnecessary additives, preferably made from organically grown hemp. Above all, make sure the product has been tested by an independent laboratory: you can ask us for these test results at any time. They confirm the CBD content and ensure compliance with the legal THC limit, which must not exceed 0.3%.
Also check out the type of extract. To help you figure it out, Mama has written a guide on the differences between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate.
Store it properly
Store CBD oil away from light and heat, in a tightly sealed bottle. Avoid keeping it on a windowsill, in a car during the summer, or in the bathroom. To find out how long it lasts, read our article on the shelf life of CBD oil.
Precautions
If you have a health condition, are taking medication, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using a CBD product. And if you have any questions, a healthcare professional is always the best person to ask.
Finally, always store your CBD products out of the reach of children and pets, and keep them in their original bottles with the labels attached. The label reminds you how to use your product properly.
