Buying CBD in Switzerland

There's been a lot of talk about cannabis for health, and perhaps even more since 2022 and the authorization of cannabis for medical use in Switzerland. While cannabinoid-based products - including CBD - have been authorized for several years now in all European countries, CBD is on the rise.

In pharmacies, with a doctor's prescription, in its medical form or over the counter, particularly online or in specialist stores, cannabis is easy to obtain in Switzerland.

In fact, the range of wellness products is very comprehensive. Stores offer CBD flowers ideal for vaporizing or cooking, oils for internal and external use, sweets and treats, cosmetics, infusions and even lines for pets.

CBD comes in all shapes and sizes, andis attracting more and more consumers, who are being tempted by the lower prices seen in recent years.

All this is legal, but on one condition: that cannabis-based products contain no more than 1% THC , the psychoactive substance found in the plant. Hence the importance of buying products that have been tested by independent laboratories, if possible.

So, if you're on the verge of being tempted, here's the lowdown on buying CBD in Switzerland.

Is CBD legal in Switzerland?

What does Swiss CBD legislation say? The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) describes cannabis as a potentially calming and pain-relieving substance, but the plant is considered a narcotic. Indeed, cannabis contains a cannabinoid known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is the psychoactive molecule in cannabis, the one that gives the high when consumed. It's worth noting that cannabis has been decriminalized in Switzerland . Adults over 18 in possession of THC-rich cannabis (but over 10g) will be fined CHF 100.

But it's important to differentiate between the various cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is not a psychoactive molecule, so all products containing it are authorized for sale and consumption in Switzerland. Derived products, however, must contain less than 1% THC to be considered legal.

The legal situation of cannabis and other cannabinoids in Switzerland

As we began to discuss earlier, not all cannabinoids are banned in Switzerland. In fact, all other molecules derived from hemp are authorized, as are CBG-, CBN- and other-based products.

Again, items must not exceed the legal THC threshold of 1% on finished product. Cannabinoid-based products will also have to be promoted as lifestyle products, not pharmaceuticals.

Since August 2022, the case of medical cannabis has been even different from what we discussed earlier. Its use for medical purposes is now authorized. A doctor can now prescribe cannabis in the form of magistral preparations or medicinal preparations prepared on prescription by pharmacists.

The only cannabis-based medicine authorized in Switzerland is Sativex® , which also requires a doctor's prescription. It is generally prescribed for chronic nervous disorders or severe epilepsy.
