Your CBD extract is changing texture in the jar: an explanation of nucleation

You may have ordered a CBD extract with a smooth or creamy texture, only to notice a few weeks later that crystals or small granules have formed. This phenomenon may come as a surprise, but it’s often due to a natural process called nucleation, which I’ll explain in more detail.

What is nucleation in CBD extracts?


The term "nucleation" refers to the process by which molecules dissolved in a mixture begin to organize themselves to form solid structures called crystals.


This phenomenon occurs everywhere in nature. When water freezes, the molecules arrange themselves to form ice. When a highly concentrated syrup cools, sugar crystals may form. Hemp extracts sometimes follow the same principle.


In the case of concentrates and CBD resins, it is primarily the cannabidiol molecules that gradually aggregate to form crystals visible to the naked eye.


Why Does CBD Tend to Crystallize?


CBD has an important chemical property: in its pure form, it naturally tends to crystallize.


When their concentration in an extract becomes high, certain molecules seek to return to a more stable state. They then gradually assemble around small starting points called crystallization nuclei.


This phenomenon often indicates a high concentration of relatively unprocessed cannabinoids.


The Case of CBDA


In some raw extracts, CBDA may also contribute to nucleation. CBDA is the acid form naturally present in the plant before it is converted to CBD. Like cannabidiol, this molecule has a structure that promotes crystal formation under certain conditions.


The simultaneous presence of CBD and CBDA can sometimes accelerate the changes in texture observed over time.

Why does the texture of an extract change over time?


Cannabinoid concentration plays a major role


Not all extracts pose the same risk of nucleation. In fact, the higher the CBD concentration, the more molecules are packed into a small space. This density promotes interactions between molecules and increases the likelihood of crystallization.


That is why highly concentrated extracts generally change texture more easily than products containing small amounts of cannabinoids.


Some concentrates that were initially translucent may thus become opaque or grainy after several weeks.


Terpenes affect stability


Terpenes act as natural solvents capable of temporarily keeping cannabinoids in suspension. When an extract contains a high amount of terpenes, the texture often remains more fluid for a longer period of time. In contrast, a product with lower terpene content may crystallize more quickly.


That's one of the reasons why two extracts with similar CBD levels can develop completely differently in their jars.


Temperature accelerates certain changes


Temperature fluctuations have a significant effect on nucleation. Storage in a cool environment often promotes the formation of crystals. Conversely, a higher temperature can temporarily slow this process or make the extract more pliable.


The repeated cycles of heating and cooling can also alter the internal structure of the concentrate.


That is why an extract stored in a car during the winter or exposed to significant temperature fluctuations may degrade more quicklythan a product stored in a stable environment. The packaging of the resin (and the flowers) is therefore very important.

The Formation of Microcrystals


In some cases, nucleation begins imperceptibly. Tiny crystals form inside the extract without immediately altering its overall appearance.


Over time, these microcrystals increase in number and give the product a slightly grainy texture.


The product remains fully usable despite this change.


A creamy texture or a "badder" texture


When nucleation occurs uniformly, thethe extract can take on a thicker, creamier texture. This effect is desired in certain high-end concentrates, whose consistency is sometimes reminiscent of butter or whipped cream.


Greater crystallization


In some extracts that are particularly high in CBD, nucleation can become very visible. white or translucent crystals then become clearly visible in the product.


Nucleation, Quality, and Preservation: Is There Cause for Concern?


A change in appearance is not a deterioration


One of the most common misconceptions is the belief that an extract that crystallizes is spoiled. In most cases, this is not true.


Nucleation primarily alters the texture and sometimes the visual appearance. It does not automatically imply a loss of quality or degradation of the cannabinoids.


Signs That Should Really Raise a Red Flag


However, there is a difference between normal nucleation and actual product deterioration. An unusual odor, mold growth, abnormal discoloration, or signs of moisture may indicate a storage problem.


On the other hand, the formation of crystals or a change in consistency are generally expected in certain cannabinoid-rich concentrates.
